City center is a quick 15 minute train ride from the airport. I have to admit, I expected sensory overload of skunky sweet clouds of goodness, half naked women and millions of bikes when I stepped of the train. The misconception that most Americans have of Amsterdam is deeply rooted in the films that we watch depicting Amsterdam as an adult play land. I was surprised to step out into a city of beautiful architecture, interesting history and engaging museums such as the Van Gogh Museum. Don’t get me wrong there are “coffee shops” and brothels in the city but they are heavily regulated, much like alcohol is regulated in the US.
Amsterdam is a place for all people of all ages to explore from canal tours, a visit to the house Anne Frank hid from the Nazi’s and of course renting a bike and getting lost in this beautiful city. Amsterdam is a safe city and is one of my favorite places I have been lucky enough to visit, I know I will make it back in years to come.
